Rather than giving a totally generic, unoriginal definition of CrossFit, we decided it would be a good idea to tell you our view of how we perceive CrossFit. There is nothing wrong with the original definition, and we would highly encourage you go to www.crossfit.com and read it. However, you can see this same definition at almost any CrossFit site in the nation, so to the average un-experienced person it would imply that no matter where you go, CrossFit is the same. The beauty of CrossFit is its diversity between all of the affiliates throughout the world. Everyone perceives it differently and has their own individual approach to teaching it.
Our view of CrossFit here at CFBN is pretty straightforward. It’s all about GPP (General Physical Preparedness). This means we take a wide variety of physical tasks and try to be good at all of them. This requires proficiency in the 10 general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, strength, stamina, speed, power, coordination, balance, agility, flexibility and accuracy. Most people can agree that all of these things have to do with being physically fit; however, most people only focus on one or two of them when they work out. Our goal is to make all of our members good at all 10 of these physical domains so they will be on their way to being truly “fit.”
Too many people get stuck in their “comfort zone.” They only do things they’re competent at and are afraid if they try something new, it could be hard or make them look stupid. If you are afraid to step out of that zone and try new things, this is not the place for you. Working out is supposed to be hard; the human body was made to do work. And no, jogging on a treadmill or sitting on a stationary bike while watching TV or reading a magazine is not work – or even hard for that matter. Our goal is to build an open-minded community that is not afraid of trying new things and living an active, healthy lifestyle.
So what exactly do we do here? We work our butts off and reap the benefits. We use a wide variety of compound, multi-joint movements that elicit a response in the body unrivaled by isolation movements such as bicep curls, tricep extensions, leg curls, calf raises, anything done on a “machine,” etc…We deadlift, squat, press, snatch, clean and jerk, do pull-ups, push-ups, ring dips, muscle ups, run, row, sit-up, throw heavy stuff, and much, much more. Our workouts are relatively short, but also very intense. That being said, everyone has a different intensity level. Our job as coaches is to find the point to which each individual in the program can push themselves. Our workouts are generally timed, which raises the intensity level but also makes it easy to see increases in performance steadily and quickly. As coaches we pride ourselves on being able to scale properly. That way we’re giving each individual a workout fitted to his or her relative strengths and limitations. This allows people to challenge their physical capabilities to the utmost, making sure everyone is able to do a lot of work quickly. Doing a lot of work quickly – our definition of a high-power output – is the shortcut to RESULTS!
